The weather report claimed partly sunny skies over Rocky Mountain National Park, but I arrived at Mills Lake to a completely overcast sky with low clouds. The wind blowing across the lake was powerful and the clouds were rapidly chugging overhead like freight trains. I passed a few photographers coming down from the lake who didn’t think there’d be any chance of a good sunset. As it began to snow, I thought the same. Still, I hiked this far so I I hunkered down into a ball behind a rock and waited for any sign of light. I periodically jumped in place and did pushups to keep warm during the 2 hours I waited until sunset. The thick ice made loud cracking sounds as it heaved in the wind. Too many times in the past I packed up and headed home when conditions looked like this only to miss a surprise sunset. Just as I was wondering if sunset was already over, the clouds to the west cracked open just enough to let the final sliver of remaining sun paint the peaks gold and the sky rouge. The scene looked like this for about 1 minute before it turned back to dark gray.
