This is a swarm of Longfin Eels that let me get close with my underwater camera. They lived around a dock in a lake on the South Island. They’re not dangerous or aggressive, but are willing to take a nibble to see if something is edible. One nipped into my pinky finger after taking this shot. They can reach 8ft long and live up to 100 years. They spend their lives in freshwater lakes, but then swim down rivers, and then thousands of miles out to sea where they spawn once and die. Hatchling eels then make there way back to New Zealand and return up-river to lakes.
