Though I took this photo after I first arrived in NZ, I was also in Kaikoura on the day of the 7.5 earthquake. Only fate made me decide to drive further that day, narrowly escaping the earthquake that shook around midnight. Kaikoura was the hardest hit town in NZ, with all roads in being severed by massive landslides and simply being ripped apart. Thousands were stranded and had to be transported out by ship and chopper. Amazingly there were only 2 deaths, caused by buildings collapsing, and there surely would have been more if the quake hit during the day with the highways full.
