This pasture filled with old world huts above Geroldsee with the alps in the background possessed an ambience that you could cut with a butter knife. The air was still and brisk as the sun set, permeated with the smell of fresh cut hay and wood burning stoves. In the distance cowbells chimed, hawks cawed, and the local train, fitted with a turn of the century horn, tooted from the distant valley. This was a landscape removed from modern time with only relics visible as far as you could see-mountains and spruce forests dotted with centuries old villages. The Karwendel mountain range in the background forms part of the border between Germany and Austria.
