Though other of my photos from Patagonia have received more attention, this may be my personal favorite from El Chalten. I’ve always been attracted to dead, twisted wood as a subject matter because it creates a strong mood that can range from mystical to dark. I also liked how the burning band of trees ripped through the center of this otherwise cold-feeling landscape to create a powerful contrast. I was hiking back to camp after from another spot after having photographed Mount Fitz Roy when the clouds and light began to dissipate. Right as I happened upon this scene, the clouds condensed to become thicker and caught the last color of the setting sun, which matched the orange in the Lenga Beech Trees.
