The “Blindschleiche” or Slowworm (Anguis fragilis) is a type of legless lizard that is very common in Germany and across Europe, and is completely harmless. Care must be taken when handling these lizards because the tail readily breaks off with slight pressure. Active nerves make the tail twitch after it has been dropped thereby occupying would-be predators while the Blindschleiche escapes, and the tail regrows.
I’ve come across many Blindschleiche along openings in the forest and on trailsides, both beneath logs and slithering about. Individuals with turquoise spots happen on occasion, but are not common. You can see that this Blindschleiche has recently shed its tail because it’s short and stumpy.
