2013 was my best year in photography by far. That’s in large part to my trip to New Zealand, but I had some great backpacking trips in Colorado, and Autumn was spectacular.

Indian Peaks Wilderness has some remote and spectacular destinations. Lake Isabelle is one of the easier hikes. Though I was here for a sunrise shot, it’s not until these great clouds moved in at late morning that I got the shot.
Blue Lakes is in my top 3 destinations in Colorado. It’s a jaw-dropping hike and is target rich. Again in this shot…though I was there for sunrise light, good clouds are more important for a good landscape composition.
My back deck is a window to amazing natural events all year long. This storm moved from South to North casting bolts. I panned my camera along with it and then stitched the images into a panoramic. Each exposure was 3 minutes long to capture multiple strikes.
We assume that all photos are post processed to add a bit of pop, and indeed most are, but in this case the red was even more brilliant in person. This is looking out over my garden from my backyard.
Though not a far hike, Mystic Falls in the San Juan Mountains is unmapped and a little tricky to find.
Another brilliant Ft. Collins sunset from my garden
Whenever I make it back home to Missouri I like to go herping. This is a Cave Salamander.
Red Milk Snake from Missouri
Fall 2013 was rare with notable colors, good clouds and an early snow. Here, East Beckwith Peak.
Mills Lake in the dead of Winter. My eyes teared from the wind and froze on my lashes.
New Zealand. This kayaker warned me that he was about to run the falls and didn’t want to “ruin” my shot. Stacked image.
Mt. Cook was my trophy shot from New Zealand. Just moments before the peak was hidden and the water surface a mess with wind.
Snow-capped peaks, azure water, and sprawling Lupines…what else could you ask for? Lake Tekapo, New Zealand
One of many great views along the Routeburn Track, New Zealand
