This wouldn’t have been a keeper were it not for the odd warm spell in late Winter that began to melt Dream Lake. Otherwise there wouldn’t have been a reflection and it would’ve just been a dull photo with a white foreground and no clouds.

This was a very difficult hike to Laguna de los Tres at the base of Mount Fitz Roy, and even though I was here for a sunrise shot, this gorgeous view of submerged rocks was my favorite from the day.

Herping is one of my absolute favorite photography experiences. Here’s a fine Western Rattlesnake from La Junta, Colorado.

I’ll never forget how dramatic shooting the Milky Way above Mills Lake was. I began the 3 mile hike in the evening, long after all the hikers had left the National Park. I was completely alone here in the backcountry and free to experiment with light to my heart’s content.

Arches National Park is Milky Way paradise with so many cool rock formations to place in the foreground.

I captured a very similar shot of Mills Lake about 10 years ago and have since hoped for the same conditions again. I had my rig set up for a few hours, but just for a few seconds the sun broke through the clouds to make the rocks glow, a light breeze made the light shimmer on the rocks, and the clouds formed into a dramatic shape. Then it was all gone.

With my rig set up standing in this beautiful meadow, the light wasn’t looking like a good sunset was going to happen. Just as I was about to give up, the clouds turned pink for just a few seconds and it turned into one of my favorite shots of the year.
