It’s not often that I get to shoot a crab with snow capped mountains behind it, but even more interesting was what scores of local Kaikourians were doing on the beach. Groups of friends and family were searching nooks and crannies of the beech at low tide carrying lists. When I asked, they were on a community scavenger hunt for who could find the most items, which included the likes of Cockles, Mussels, and a large Crab. However, the most valuable item on the list was to actually find an Octopus. Moments after learning this I witnessed a man flipping a rock in a shallow tidal pool. He found a single tentacle of an Octopus sticking out of a hole and pulled on it until the whole Kraken emerged.
